An A3 is a problem-solving format constrained to a single sheet: context, current state, analysis, countermeasures, plan and follow-up, all visible at once.
The size limit is the method rather than a formatting preference. A page forces the thinking to be complete and legible, and the discipline of fitting it exposes where the reasoning is thin — a vague problem statement survives ten slides and cannot survive a box three inches wide.
It doubles as a working document. Because the whole argument is visible, a reviewer can see whether the countermeasures follow from the analysis, which is exactly what gets lost across a deck. In the Toyota tradition it is also a coaching artefact: the author owns it and is questioned on it, and that questioning is the point.
Filled in retrospectively to document a decision already taken, it becomes a report and loses everything that made it worth doing. The other failure is treating the template as the method — an A3 with every box populated and no causal reasoning connecting them is a form.
