A dairy processing less milk after a boiler replacement may consume less fuel even if energy performance has deteriorated. Comparing fuel consumption per tonne processed provides an initial check. Where fixed heating loads are substantial, a regression model relating consumption to production volume can provide a stronger comparison than a single consumption-per-tonne ratio. The reference period should cover the operating conditions the project intends to assess.
Within DMAIC, the energy baseline belongs in Measure and supports the evaluation of changes in Improve. Measurement system analysis helps establish whether fuel meters and production records support that comparison. An ISO 50001 energy management system provides a broader structure for maintaining energy baselines. The control plan assigns responsibility for reviewing departures from expected consumption, while return-on-investment analysis translates verified energy savings into financial benefits using documented energy prices.
