A project sponsor is the manager or executive accountable for authorising a Lean Six Sigma project, securing resources, and resolving decisions beyond the project team’s authority.

In DMAIC, the sponsor agrees the business need and project boundaries through the project charter. The role includes approving commitments of staff time and resolving conflicts between departments. The sponsor needs enough organisational authority to act when an improvement requires changes outside the project leader’s control.

For example, a team investigating order-entry errors may propose a two-week pilot that requires sales staff to validate customer requirements before releasing orders. The sponsor authorises the staffing commitment and resolves any dispute over departmental priorities. The process owner agrees the operating arrangements and remains responsible for the order-entry process. A peer-review group can challenge the evidence supporting the pilot; its recommendations inform the approval decision.

The sponsor’s role differs from that of a Green Belt or Black Belt, who typically leads the analysis and coordinates improvement work. A project charter records the sponsor’s authority and the decisions requiring escalation. At handover, the sponsor resolves gaps in ownership, while the ohjaussuunnitelman identifies who will monitor performance and respond to deterioration.
